BULLYING 101

 BULLYING 101 TRAINING

DVA Leadership & Development Training is partnering with Proviso West High School in November and December to provide its 2014 freshman class with educational development on Bullying.  School District 209 - Proviso West High School has more than 500 students in its freshman class from multiple feeder communities.
DVA  staff worked with Proviso West principal, Oscar Hawthorne this summer to start a Peer Mediation program. Bullying is next on a list of youth and professional development strategies Hawthorne has planned for his students, staff and parents this school year.

Bullying is defined as unwanted, aggressive behavior that involves a real or perceived imbalance of power.  It is negative, aggressive behaviors that are repeated with the intent of harm from one youth to another.

Traditional forms of bullying like physical aggression, hitting, pinching, pushing and property damage remain an issue however in today's technological age, we're faced with other types of bullying too.
Verbal bullying: Name calling, insults, teasing and intimidation.  This form of bullying includes verbal abuse like inappropriate sexual comments, taunting and threatening other to cause harm.

Social bullying includes alienation, ruining ones reputation to cause humiliation, spreading rumors, nasty jokes and social exclusion.

Cyber bullying is happening publicly and privately. It is cruel and intentional to its victims.  Cyber bullying is abusive, hurtful texts, emails, and other Internet posts including images or videos.  It is deliberately excluding others online, gossip, digital rumors and online intimidation.

These and other types of bullying have very negative consequences as many youth demonstrate a lack of empathy and respect for their peers.  A continued imbalance of power, such as strength, access to embarrassing information, or popularity is being used to control others.  More attacks are contributing to greater suicide attempts and forcing young people out of school. Many are attacks on the lesbian and gay community youth.

Today's bullied are not the only ones at risk.  Victims of bullying are taking devastating action with deadly consequences to stop their bullies.

DVA is honored to work with Proviso West School District 209 to educate young people toward a solution.
